A seminar on "Fibre-optic distributed acoustic sensing for earthquake monitoring" is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, at 11 a.m., at the Institute of Mechanical Intelligence (Blue Room, Via Moruzzi 1, Pisa), held by Marcelo A. Soto, associate professor at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (Valparaíso, Chile) and former PhD student at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna.

The seminar aims to examine the main features of fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) for earthquake monitoring using telecommunication fiber optics. The first part of the seminar is devoted to reviewing the state of the art of DAS technology, including the principle of operation and some of the most robust interrogation schemes available in the literature today. This is followed by the presentation of some recent experimental analyses of distributed earthquake monitoring using a submarine telecommunication optical cable in Chile.
